Name: South Fished Street

Description: South Fished Street features 36 bronze and stainless steel elements depicting fish embedded in the concrete sidewalk. 13 students from the Art in Community class under the direction of Professor Tony May were responsible for design, fabrication, and installation of the public art. The design for the installation was developed through discussion among Art in Community class members who were inspired by a visit to the koi pond in the Japanese Friendship Garden in San Jose’s Kelley Park. The design uses the park sidewalk as a “meandering stream” populated by a variety of fish. The fish represent the diversity of individuals from many cultures that live in the Martha Gardens neighborhood. The fish are also a playful reference to elaborate water features and ornamental fishponds.
